About Me

The small town I grew up in only had two industries. The main one was farming but nestled in the heart of the town was a small university. I took the path to the center of town and came out with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University. The small town was Sackville, New Brunswick.

I met three professors there who profoundly influenced me. Lauren Harris Jr., like his famous father, was ahead of his times. His hard edges and moody colours became abstract paintings and, for us students, this was a completely new form of visual expression.

Ted Pulford was a skilled at watercolours. The surrounding farmlands and marshes came alive in his paintings. My love for the medium was born under the Maritime’s variable sky and his valuable teaching.

Alex Colville was the expert in distilled suspense. He used real egg to mix pigments for his own tempera paint. I didn’t do well with the mixes or the exact painting method, but I did learn the value of off-centre perspective.

In Toronto I had many group and solo shows. In the Maritimes I did the same.

Now that I live in Ottawa I have entered work into different juried shows and have dabbled in some of the online contests. I have met artists with vision and drive. Farming was not the path I took. For an artist, this is very fertile farmland.
